Whether you carry a gun or not, a quality handheld light is one of the most important items you can stick in your pocket on a daily basis. Of course, a bright, white-light flashlight is essential for the armed citizen, as positive target identification is an absolute must when making shoot/no-shoot decisions. Also, a proper tactical flashlight can be a defensive implement in itself; a bright light in the eyes can either discourage an attacker or temporarily blind them, affording the defender an opportunity to evade attack. You can carry a flashlight into places where you cannot take a firearm, so you can always have it with you. And although it is kind of obvious, I should also mention that having a flashlight is just handy. Drop something under your desk? Power out? No problem.

“OK, Dave…you’ve sold me on the idea of carrying a flashlight. Which one should I get?” Whew. That is a tough one. There are tons of different tactical flashlights out there, from tons of different manufacturers, at all kinds of prices. But you’re in luck. My friend Kevin Creighton at Ammoman.com has literally done your homework for you. Kevin has sampled 20 different lights, representing everything from expensive high-end lights to more budget-friendly options, and run them all through a battery (pun intended) of standardized tests to determine what each of them will and won’t do.
