Let's Go Shooting!
Although it’s almost over…I guess it’s better late than never to mention that August is National Shooting Sports Month, sponsored by the National Shooting Sports Foundation.
The fact is, though it is late in the summer season, it is never too late to get out and do a little shooting. I am especially a fan of action shooting sports such as those sponsored by the United States Practical Shooting Association (USPSA) and the International Defensive Pistol Association (IDPA).
Here’s your favorite middle-of-the-pack, C Class shooter enjoying a recent USPSA match…
If you’re a pistol shooter and you’ve never tried it, you really should consider giving it a go. You probably already have most (if not all) of the gear necessary to compete. Matches are normally run by shooting clubs across the country, and odds are that there is one near you.
Besides being great fun, matches of this type are an excellent way to hone pistol handling and shooting skills. During a match, you will have the opportunity to draw and present from the holster, engage multiple targets (sometimes moving) with multiple shots, perform speed reloads, and perhaps practice malfunction clearances. All of this while incorporating movement, and under time pressure.
Did I mention that it was fun?
